BIOGRAPHY
As the Australian Institute of Training and Development’s 2021, L&D Professional of the Year, and Gold Stevie award winner for Female Entrepreneur of the Year, 2021, Anneli’s passion for decoding people and performance dynamics makes her a sought after speaker, mentor and leadership expert.
With her keynote speaking, and flagship programs on Women@Work, and DEI Dialogues, Anneli supports women to increase their visibility, confidence and personal power for greater professional impact.
She brings her gender advocacy to large groups of leaders and is known for creating safe spaces to explore the issues and opportunities of inclusion, belonging and allyship in practical and profound ways. To Anneli, workplace equality is not only about policies; it’s also about the daily practices that support them. This is not about eradicating our human bias, it’s about humanising our leadership habits.
This focus on daily behaviours features heavily in her guest appearance on a documentary called ‘Transcending the gender narrative’ along with several of her co-authored books on shifting human behaviour. Her pocketbook, ‘When men lead women: Navigating the facts, fears and frustrations of gender equality as a male leader’, explores the response of men to the rise of women in power and provides a practical pathway towards daily allyship and is a companion guide to her newest release, ‘The Gender Penalty’.
‘The Gender Penalty: Turning obstacles into opportunities for women at work’, is a culmination of the last five years of supporting women in leadership through her award-winning Women@Work program. The book helps women navigate male-dominated leadership landscapes and gives them the tools to speak up, step in and stand out, on their own terms.

THE BOOK SHOWCASE
THE GENDER PENALTY
Turning obstacles into opportunities for women at work
By Anneli Blundell
It’s 2023, so you’d think that career progression wouldn’t still be impacted by your gender. Yet here we are.
The truth is, work is a game originally developed by men, for men. Though the players have changed, the rules to succeed have not. When today's talented women play like men, they often get punished for not being 'ladylike', and when they play like women, they get punished for not being 'leaderlike'. Welcome to the gender penalties that sideline women from the game of work.
In the new book, The Gender Penalty, leadership expert Anneli Blundell has written a practical guide for navigating career success in a male-dominated environment. Packed with easy-to-follow practical strategies, insights, case studies and stories, Anneli shows how to not only overcome the gender penalties on the field, but also change the game of work for good - for yourself and other women. The book explores how to navigate the five key gender penalties women are all too familiar with:
-
Confidence - being seen as arrogant
-
Communication - being interrupted, talked over or ignored
-
Boasting - being expected to be humble
-
Strength - being seen as aggressive
-
Motherhood - being seen as uncommitted to work
If you’re sick of being ignored, undervalued, and overlooked, The Gender Penalty empowers you with the tools needed to get ahead and succeed without changing who you are.
The book provides multiple digital bonuses including:
-
The Coaches Playbook – a guide to help your manager fend off the gender penalties you might face at work
-
The Gender Penalty workbook - a summary guide to help you personalise the main plays of the book
-
The Gender Penalty Quiz – to see which penalty you need a stronger strategy for overcoming
-
The Chick Chat Guide – guided discussion questions to facilitate reflection and learning with a group of friends or colleagues
-
and various other bonuses like cheat sheets, summary checklists, and videos.
